Reunion 2008.

More than 250 ex Scouts, friends and supporters joined together at the Band Club for a reunion.

Nick Powell welcomed guests from all over England - and those who had travelled specially from all parts of the globe including Canada, the USA, Italy, Spain and even Wales! Messages of congratulations from as far away as New Zealand, Australia, the USA, Georgia and all over the UK were read out. A special mention was made of those founder Scouts that had gone before, those who had made the supreme sacrifice for King, Queen and Country and to absent friends.

A particular group of young men and their Leader, Colin Cross, were popular guests, being winners of the Scout Trophy in the Devizes -Westminster Canoe Race in 1970's. Music was provided by the Old Speckled Men and a buffet was enjoyed - some stayed on until 3-00am!

Here is a selection of the messages we received after the reunion.

Nick, Brilliant night!! Very interesting display down the scout hut, very good speech and scrumptious food. Thanks very much to yourself and all who helped in the organisation.

Thanks again, Robin Piggott

Nick and everyone involved,

Just a short note to thank you all for arranging the exhibition at the scout hut and the reunion event. Both I and Diana had a really good time, laughing at old photos and catching up with old friends we had not seen for years. The only thing lacking, in most cases, was hair amongst the attendees, does this have something to do with Scouting!

Well done and congratulations to everyone.
Jonathan and Diana Munton

Nick,

I would like to personally congratulate you on a great weekend. I know a lot of people were involved and many, many hours of peoples time, but it would have not been such a great success without your focus and drive. I know a lot of blood, sweat and tears have gone into the project but I am sure this is not the only praise you will get. THANKS !!!!!!!!!!

Regards Matt Howell

Nick

Thank you to I'boro scout group for inviting me to your historical weekend and celebration of 100 years. I don't think in the 32 years I've been in Scouting has there been such a successful event within the district. Such a lot of work has gone into your HQ since I was last there and your exhibition was brilliant, it was also great to meet "old" Scouters I hadn't seen for ages. Thanks for a great evening and I'll give my apologies now but I won't be able to make your 200 year celebrations.

Rose

Hi Nick,

Just a quick note to say thanks for organising the reunion. It was great to see so many people I knew, and to reminisce about times gone by. We all thought the exhibition was exceptional, and talking to a few people has even given me some ideas fro my next few Scouting mag articles.

Thanks for putting in so much work.

Yours in Scouting, Martin

Lyle,

Thanks very much for inviting me to yesterday’s re-union, I really enjoyed it. Talking through with Les the huge variety of things we did during our time in the scouts brought back loads of happy memories. It has also made me think of the value of these experiences in my growing up. I’d like to take the opportunity to thank you for your massive part in this, we were really lucky to have a leader that made the activities interesting and fun.

All the best, Robin

Hello Nik,

A BIG, BIG thank you to all who helped to organise such a wonderful reunion! It was so amazing to meet old friends some of whom I hadn't seen for 35 years. Talking to Bob Felce he mentioned that he had seen a photograph on the computer at the Scout hut of the Raven conference in Luton which featured among others myself [Andy Titcomb] with Zibby, Bob Felce and others, if there is any chance of you emailing this to me at any time I should be eternally grateful :-)

Many many thanks. Andy Titcomb [Ticky]

Lyle,

Thank you very much for inviting me. I was disappointed not to have been able to make the Saturday night which I understand was pretty packed. However, I did enjoy seeing the display and seeing you again on the Sunday (not to mention meeting Nick). The display brought back quite a few memories and it was good to see a few old faces in the photographs.

Kind Regards. Matt

Nick,

Well done for Saturday night, good show! rock on

Adrian Powell

Nick,

Thanks for all the hard work you and Tanya and the rest of the crew put in. Was a great evening and what a fantastic total!

cu soon. Sue

Nick,

On behalf of Linda, myself and the vast quantity of old friends and acquaintances we met last Saturday I want to thank you and your team for the efforts made to make the centenary such a success. The display at the Hut was fascinating and informative and invoked so many memories. IT WAS A GREAT NIGHT TOO!.. Thanks again to all

Best wishes Pierre Perkins.

Lyle,

Thank you for all the work you and the group did to make the reunion such an informative and enjoyable occasion. I thought that it was very well done, and obviously a great deal of work and research went into making it such a successful event. It was good to meet some who I had not seen for many years, and to share memories of past adventures. Please pass on my thanks and good wishes to all who worked hard and contributed to the evening.

I hope that you are well and fully recovered from all the efforts that went into making the event such a success.

Best wishes, David Mason

Lyle,

Yes it was a brilliant night!!!!!! To see most of our group together again was a real happy experience. I hope everyone enjoyed themselves as much as Ruth and I did. I hope the evening alo raised a few pounds so that those boys (and girls) in the Scout group can continue the good timeswe all shared.

Hi Lyle,

Many thanks for the photo, a perfect memory of a wonderful reunion. It is a testament to the group that these men (I nearly said lads) still like to keep in touch.

A huge effort was put in by many people resulting in a resounding success: Irthlingborough should be proud of their Scout Group. I was particularly impressed with the current leadership who appear to be vigorous and foreword looking though I think your record of forty years service to the Group will remain unchallenged. I do believe it necessary to adopt new leaders from time to time in order to keep a constant freshness and sense of challenge in the activities, people who can combine and adapt all that is good in 'old style scouting' with the new challenges of today. In my time we learned semaphore and morse; today it would be difficult to visualise when either of these might be useful yet we can still learn to communicate, to survive under difficult conditions, to cook, to read the weather, to travel cross country, alone or with others in short we can discover ourselves.

Leaders come and leaders go each putting into the movement whatever it is they have to offer for a few years until they move on to pastures new, but sometimes, just occasionally there comes a person who dedicates themselves to the movement, someone prepared to devote the major part of their life in the service of others. This you have done and have the Silver Wolf and letters of commendation to prove it but your greatest treasure is the friendship and respect of the young men who have crossed your path in the Irthlingborough Scout Group.

Regards Colin Cross

Dear Nik,

Just a short thanks for the hospitality I received when I visited the scout hut on the Sunday morning. I have to say that it was a very moving experience to walk back into the building that I hadn't entered for so many years and with so many memories all around. congratulations to yourself the other helpers and all the youngsters for a marvelous exibition. As I said at the time, if I can help in any way in the future please feel free to contact me if I'm able to help I would do so gladly.

Once again many thanks. Alister Shand

Lyle

I write to congratulate you and the group on a most memorable weekend of celebrations for the 100th Anniversary. All those involved with the hard work of organising such an event should be proud of what they achieved. Myself and Rachel were very pleased to have been included in the celebrations on Saturday evening, such a tremendous turnout speaks volumes as to how many peoples lives have been touched by the Scouting movement in Irthlingborough all wanting to join together to share their memories with others. To achieve 100 years is remarkable in its self, but to have such a lively and committed team should ensure the groups continuing success. Once again many thanks and best wishes to you all

Mary Burdett & Rachel Bettles

Lyle

Was great seeing all the old gang together again after so many years.

Take care, & beware of gate posts, David Fisher (Div)

Hi Nick

Can I please pass on to you, on behalf of your group, my sincere congratulations for the most wonderful evening last Saturday. My hearty thanks to you all for all the work that went into the display at the scout hut and the endless hours you and your team (Mr Abbott included!) must have put in over the past 12 months in e-mails and post to get that evening 'together'. Can I also mention your speech was brilliant, you did Irthlingborough proud. I had the most wonderful time, from 6pm watching those dreaded slides on the P.C. over and over again watching for various members of the Desborough Rangers during the 70's when I first got tangled up with 'Irthlingborough' and its Venture Scouts! Throughout the evening more laughter and memories were regailed, it was as the advert says 'PRICELESS!'

Once again, THANK-YOU

Yours in scouting. Liz Armstrong

Hi Nick

As promised e copies of you with Pamela Putt ne Le Marquand, 'Grand Daughter of Jesse Berwick'. Well done to all for an excellent display for the hard work that must have gone into it

Richard Putt, on behalf of Pamela Putt

Nick

Many Thanks for organising the event. It was a fantatsic night and I think everyone there enjoyed it.

Again many thanks. Phil Bailey

Dear Nick

Thank you for inviting me to your centenary celebrations this weekend. They were impressive & most enjoyable. I trust yoy will go forward from strength to strength. If I can help or support don’t hesitate to let me know. Congratulations you deserve a rest!

Kind Regards John (Revd Canon Joh Westwood)

Nick

Yes I think a great night was had by all, especially all those that ended back at my house in Kettering till around 3.30am! I think that you and all the others did a fantastic job and I am really pleased that so many people attended.

Best regards, Mike Digby

Nick

Sorry about the delay in replying but with living and working in Spain I have been trying to juggle my timetable planning but will not be able to make the October event. I will be in Irthlingborough during the late Summer however and hope to catch up on some of the things that are happening and wish all of you all the best for what is a well deserved milestone. My Patrol Leaders memories are still dear to me and I wouldn't be playing the piano now had Skip Dennett not awarded me the Music Makers badge so that I felt I had to earn it!!!

Best wishes, Paul Needle

Lyle

It was lovely meeting up with Debbie (Marlow as was) again and we relived old times. I always enjoyed camping with her and Lucy because the camps were small and friendly. Debbie reminded me of the time we burnt the sausages and how we managed to turn 14 sausages into 14 perfect sticks of charcoal. Actually we cooked 15 but one was edible and we had half each. It was a very good exhibition and Peter and I are both glad we made it.

Jeannie Chamberlain

Nick

I got the invitation thanks, me and my partner are planning on heading over for the weekend. I’m now working in Huntingdon, a bit closer to home, for a retail fit out company

Both Becky and I are involved with Scouts here in St. Ives; I’m an AESL and Becky’s a Scout leader with one of the groups here. We’re also involved with the District Mountain Club, running trips to the hills for Scouts, Explorers and leaders and have just returned from a winter skills week in Scotland with the club

Jamie Abbott

Hi Nick

Just a quick email to thank you for the invite to the above. We had a really enjoyable evening meeting up with old friends. It was nice to see that so many people had made such an effort by traveling in some cases thousands of miles to be there. We realise just how much work went into the exhibition and evening in order for it to be such a success and we would both like to extend our sincere thanks to everyone involved for all their hard work both prior to and on the evening

Can we just ask one more question - when are you planning on holding the next one?!!

Best wishes, Chris & Sue Fisher

Official Re-Opening.

Phil Hope performing the re-opening

The 100th Anniversary Celebrations commenced with an official re-opening of our newly refurbished headquarters building -'The Harold Bugby Scout Centre'. We were honoured to welcome Phil Hope MP and Cabinet Minister, to perform the-re-opening. Equally we were pleased to offer a welcome and thanks to the Representatives of the Local Government Bodies who, together with business and the National Lottery, made all the refurbishments possible.

Our Trustees as well as Local Church Leaders attended and the Rector, John Westwood, gave a blessing.

Mr. Hope spoke particularly about his Scouting in London and that his mother (now 83) still actively helps with Cubs!

Group Scout Leader

1stIrthlingborough Scout Group

We are planning the Biggest 1st Irthlingborough Scout Group reunion EVER!!

How can you help?

We have a Centenary committee who will be managing all the above activities, and making sure they get delivered. There are sponsors from the current set of leaders & exec team who are supporting them.

What we need is for each of you to really dig deep & go through your address books & email lists. Who on there has had anything to do with 1st Irthlingborough Group over the last 100 years? It could be ex members, executive team, supporters, helpers, donors ~ anyone!

We are starting to build a database of peoples to be in a position in the autumn to write to everyone, invite him or her to next year's event, along with giving updates on the 100-year celebrations. We want as many ex-mambers, supporters etc. there as possible ~ we don't want anyone missing out. Could we ask that you please email centenarydb@irthlingboroughscouts.co.uk with as much information as you have (Name, Relationship to the group, address, emaill etc.), to start this process? It would be good to start sending us your own information so we have it up to date. To see out Privacy Statement, please click here.

You don't need to include current serving members as I already have those captured.

If you could send back ASAP, we would be really grateful. The earlier, the better. As new names appear we can contact them and no doubt they'll be able to add to the list.

Historical Notes for 2008.

Now that we are beginning 2008,this important year for Irthlingborough Scouting, the Group is planning to have an Exhibition of all the available photos and memorabilia at the Headquarters over the weekend of October 4th 2008.

We have gathered together a mass of material and this is in the process of being sorted, labelled and made ready for the Exhibition.

So, here's what we need YOU to do for us ....

Please speak to your neighbours, friends and colleagues and ask them if they were part of Scouting, whether they have any items of interest to us and if they have any relatives who were founder and early members of the Group.

As you can see, at the earliest point, youngsters were proud to belong to Baden Powell's Movement and were active very early in the life of Scouting-1908!

Times move on and Scouting is just as adventurous for the youngsters of 2008!

So, please contact us by email on:
