Nene Valley Scouts hold Annual General Meeting at Irthlingborough

The Annual General Meeting of the Nene Valley District Scouts took place at 1st Irthlingborough Scout Headquarters on Thursday 28th June 2012 .

Each year it is planned to move the meeting around the District which extends from Kings Cliffe to the Rushden area.

Groups from the area were represented and welcomed by the District Chairman John Rudge. The District Commissioner Michèle Height reported an excellent year for Scouting and especially highlighted the recent Diamond Jubilee Camp at which more than 600 Young People and their Leaders attended.

Reports were given for Beaver, Cub, Scout, Explorer Scout, and Network Scout activities as well as the plan devised by Nick Powell to expand and develop local Scouting over the next 5 years.

A golden weekend for a Diamond jubilee Camp

With fingers firmly crossed for good weather 1st Irthlingborough along with around 600 Young People between the ages of 6 and 18 years from all the Groups in the Nene Valley District Scouts camped at Wadenhoe over the weekend of 25th - 27th May 2012 – As luck would have it, the weekend turned out to be the best weather of the summer!!

This camp was the largest gathering of Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorer Scouts and their Leaders ever staged in the local area.

The weekend started with a Night Operation for the Scouts and Explorers and the camp for the Cubs and Beavers was themed around the ‘2012 Olympic Games’.

Another amazing AGM!! - 17th May 2012

Many thanks to everyone for your support and hard work. Our 104th AGM was very well attended – it’s turning more and more into a yearly celebration and getting better and better each time.

This was acclaimed on the night by Peter Head who was a guest of ours and used to be our ADC many years ago. He took me to one side at the end of the night and said how much he enjoyed the event. He literally said it was the best AGM he had ever attended; praise indeed from someone who must have been to hundreds of them, he even said it gave him the enthusiasm to get back involved!!

St Georges Day Parade - April 22nd 2012

The annual event started with the Group assembling at the Headquarters and marching with colours flying to St. Peter’s. All 5 Sections of the group were represented (a ‘First’ for Irthlingborough).

The Rector, Father John Hall delivered a Scout-friendly service with the Young People taking part and renewing their Promises.

Following the Service more than 100 young people along with Leaders and Parents set off on a hike to Stanwick Lakes to try out the Assault Course and work up an appetite.

The English weather stayed fine for the group and the barbecue chefs just about managed to feed everybody before they all had to be back to Irthlingborough so the young people could to be picked up by their parents.

A BIG ‘THANK-YOU’ to all who helped make the SAS contribution work, the Young People for turning up, having fun and eating burgers by the bucket- load and the Leaders for being Leaders and being there!

Special thanks to Chris Ward for sorting the food and Alistair Cochran (our Former County Commissioner) who turned up to renew his Promise and ended up being Head Chef.
